Balafon is a district of Niamey in Niger .

The district is located in the center of Niamey and administratively belongs to the Abidjan district in the Niamey III arrondissement . Balafon is located in the south of the district and is bordered by the streets of Avenue Soni Ali Ber, Avenue du Ghana and Boulevard de l'Indépendance. The neighboring districts are Banizoumbou in the southwest and Lacouroussou in the southeast. It is close to important facilities such as the Grand Marché market area and the Niamey Great Mosque .

The settlement, named after the musical instrument balafon , emerged like the Nouveau Marché district in the 1950s as part of the eastern expansion of Niamey. In 1959 there was still a small straw hut settlement called Bella Kwara , which disappeared with urbanization. Many Hausa immigrants from Ader in central Niger settled in Balafon . The first public primary school was founded in 1960. With the division of Niamey into five districts in 1979, Balafon became part of the 3rd district, which in 1989 with the 4th district in the sub-municipality Niamey II was dissolved, which in turn was dissolved in 1996 in the previous form.
