Baldassare Croce (* 1558 in Bologna , † November 8, 1628 in Rome ) was an Italian painter.

biography

After an initial training in Bologna , he moved to Rome. Here he worked as early as 1576–1577 on the decoration of the north wing of the Cortile di San Damaso in the Vatican , the Pope Gregory XIII. Lorenzo Sabatini .

He was a very active painter in Rome, where he had been a member of the Accademia di San Luca since 1581 , from which he was elected "Principe" in January 1628, a position he held until August of the same year. From 1584 he was also a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon .

In Rome he painted the Sala Clementina of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, the chapel of St. Francis in the Church of Il Gesù , worked in San Giovanni in Laterano (under Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Guerra on the decoration of the Holy Stairs) and in San Giacomo degli Spagnoli while in the nave of Santa Susanna six of its large frescoes depict the life of Saint Susanna from the Old Testament.

At the beginning of 1600 he was also active in Umbria and painted frescoes in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi and the miracles of St. Martin in the Cathedral of Foligno.

In 1608 he returned to Rome. In the following years he worked in Santa Maria Maggiore in the new sacristy and in the Capella Paolina . The frescoes in the Chapel of San Nicola in San Luigi dei Francesi also date from this period .

After his death he was buried in the monastery of Santa Maria in Via .
