Flowers of Digitalis minor

The Balearic Foxglove ( Digitalis minor , Syn .: Digitalis dubia ), is a species of plant from the plantain family (Plantaginaceae), which is endemic to the Balearic Islands .

description

The Balearic Foxglove usually reaches a size of 20 to 30 cm and is therefore a very small digitalis species. The flowers grow on one side, they can be pink to white. The stems are branched at most at the base and the leaf margin is smooth or toothed. The inflorescences are mostly terminal, partly branched and racemose.

The Balearic Foxglove blooms from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56.

distribution

Digitalis minor is endemic to three islands in the Balearic Islands . The plant is particularly common in the north-western part of Mallorca and Menorca . Specimens have also been found on the island of Cabrera . The plants grow on limestone or granite formations up to 1000 m above sea level .

Systematics

The first description of Digitalis minor was performed in 1771 by Carl Linnaeus (in Mantissa Plantarum Altera , p 587). In 1874, João Barbosa Rodrigues described the species as Digitalis dubia (in: Anales de la Sociedad Española de Historia Natural 3, p. 45), this name is now considered a synonym .

A distinction was made between two varieties: the hairy Digitalis minor var. Minor and the bald Digitalis minor var. Palaui (Garcias & Marcos) Hinz & Rosselló . However, this classification is not supported by population genetic studies.

ingredients

Digitalis minor is poisonous in all parts due to cardenolides ( digitalis glycosides ). Nevertheless, the plant does not play a role in the production of cardiac glycosides . Digitalis minor mainly produces cardiac glycosides of type A and B, digitoxigenin and gitoxigenin.
