Baler is a municipality in the province of Aurora, Philippines . The small town is the seat of the provincial government.
geography
Baler is the political and economic center of Aurora. The municipality is located about 230 km northeast of Manila in the east of the island of Luzon in a wide plain at the western end of Baler Bay . Because of the high waves, the bay attracts surfers in particular. The municipality borders on Baler Bay to the east, the municipalities of San Luis in the south, Maria Aurora in the west and Dipaculao in the northwest.
history
Baler was first mentioned by Juan de Salcedo in his notes on his raids on Luzon between 1570 and 1576. A missionary station was founded in Baler in 1609 under the leadership of the Franciscan brother Blas Palomino . In December 1735, a tsunami destroyed the place, killing most of the residents. The survivors later re-established Baler east of the original settlement, which has since been called Kinagunasan (devastated place).
In 1856, Baler became the capital of El Principo , then a district of the Nueva Ecija province . With the addition of El Principes to Tayabas in 1901, Baler also became part of this province. With the establishment of the sub-province Aurora on June 14, 1951, Baler became the seat of the provincial government.
On June 2, 1899, the 11-month siege of Baler was ended by surrender, and with it the 333-year colonial history of Spain in the Philippines .
Demographics
The population of Baler increased by more than 170% from 1970 to 2015.
surfing
The famous surf scene from the film "Apocalypse Now" was filmed in Baler in the late 1970s. After the shoot, the film crew left their surfboards, which the locals continued to use for surfing. The first surfing community in the Philippines arose in Baler. As a result, the place is often referred to as the "birthplace of surfing in the Philippines".
The Aurora Cup is attended by hundreds of surfers every February and there are also other smaller local competitions in the winter time.
The best time to surf is from October to April when the north-east monsoons hit the east coast of Luzon.
