Casiguran is a Filipino township in northern Aurora Province . It has a population of 24,313 (August 1, 2015 census).

geography

Casiguran is 121 km from the provincial capital Baler . The municipality is bordered by Dilasag to the northwest , Dinalungan to the southwest , Quirino Province to the northwest and the Pacific Ocean to the southeast . The municipality includes the elongated peninsula of San Ildefonso, which is separated from the mainland mass of Luzon by the Casiguran Sound , on which the tribe of the San Ildefonso Agta live.

Population development

In 1960 Casguran had 6900 inhabitants. This number almost doubled to 12,128 inhabitants in 1970 and has since increased by a further 76% with an average annual growth rate of 5.6%. Between 1970 and 1975 the population decreased significantly from 12,128 to 11,670. This decline was due to civil unrest that caused many people to leave the borough area. The decline in population was balanced again in 1980. During this period the population increased by 19% with an annual growth rate of 3.86%. This trend of increasing population numbers continued in the following census periods (1980 to 1995). However, the annual growth rate declined, due to the fact that during this period the deforestation gradually stopped. As a result, many forest workers who were not long-established residents of Casiguran have emigrated.

Between 1995 and 1999 the annual growth rate increased again significantly to 4.36%. If the growth rate remains the same, a further increase in the number of inhabitants of 25% by 2009 is projected.

history

According to a folk legend, the name Casiguran is derived from the word Kasiguruhan (German: "Security" or "Trust").

Casiguran was founded on June 13, 1609 by Spanish missionaries. The early settlers before the Spanish arrived were Dumagats and Aetas, followed by other immigrants from other parts of the country. These immigrants spoke Ilokano , Visayan , Biscolano , Pampango , Gaddang , Itawes and Ibanag . At the time of the Philippine independence in 1946, Aurora was still part of the province of Tayabas (now Quezon ). At that time the municipality bordered the province of Isabela in the north, in the west on the province of Quirino and in the southwest on the Baranggay Dinadiawan, which at that time formed the border between Baler and Casiguran. In 1959 and 1966, Dilasag were located in the north of the municipality and Dinalungan in the southwest of the municipality were independent municipalities. There have been a total of 34 mayors since the municipality of Casiguran was founded. Reynaldo Teh Bitong is currently the mayor.
