The Balkan Snowfield ( Bulgarian Плато Балкан Plato Balkan ) is a snowfield on a plateau 150 to 280 m in height in the east of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . In the southwest it is crossed by the Velchev Rock and the upper Contell Glacier , in the southeast and east by the foothills of the Castillo-Nunatak and the Burdick Ridge , in the north by the lower section of the Perunika Glacier and the gently sloping northwestern part through the hills bounded along the Bulgarian Beach .
On March 16, 1994, Bulgarian scientists named it after the Balkan Peninsula .
