Balranald is located in the south-west of the state on the border with Victoria on the Murray River about 850 km west of the metropolis Sydney , 530 km east of Adelaide and 430 km northwest of Melbourne . The area includes the following 24 hamlets and villages: Balranald, Banoon, Benanee, Bidura, Boree Plains, Brassbutt, Clare, Clare Alma, Corrong, Euston, Glen Dee, Hatfield, Manfred, Mungo, Penarie, Red Bang Weir, The Vale, Til Til, Tin Tin, Tupra, Turlee and parts of Kyalite, Mossgiel and Oxley. Balranald was founded in the mid-19th century at a crossing over the Murrumbidgee River . Initially, the town benefited to a small extent from the gold rush in Victoria, but it was not until the end of the century when cattle were transported from South Australia, with the establishment of a second river ferry and a customs post, that the population rose to several hundred. In 1926 the city was connected to Victoria by rail. The railway line no longer exists today, but Balranald is on the Sturt Highway on the link between Sydney and Adelaide .

Sheep breeding is an important economic factor in the region then as it is now, and there is also wheat and fruit growing in the riverside areas. Forestry also plays a bigger role.

The Shire's northwestern border passes through the Willandra Lake Region , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most important of the 17 dried up lakes, Lake Mungo , and the associated Mungo National Park are located in the area of Balnaranda and are interesting from an archaeological point of view. Among other things, the oldest fossils of human footprints worldwide can be found there.

administration

The Balranald Shire Council has ten members elected by the residents of the three wards (three each from Ward A, B and C). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
