Baltinglass ( Irish : Bealach Conglais ) is a country town in County Wicklow in the east of the Republic of Ireland .

Bealach Conglais , the Irish name of Baltinglass, means way of the Conglas , a member of the Fianna . Another Irish name for the place, Mainistir an Bhealaigh , refers to its monastic past, particularly represented in the 12th century Baltinglass Abbey , a former Cistercian monastery .

Baltinglass is located on the River Slaney in the south west of Wicklow, near its border with Counties Kildare and Carlow , on the western foothills of the Wicklow Mountains . Its population was determined in the 2016 Census to be 2137, which means that the number of inhabitants has doubled since 1991.

Baltinglass is on the N81 from Dublin via Tallaght and Blessington to Tullow and on to the N80 to Carlow Town and Enniscorthy . Baltinglass is connected to Carlow by bus and to Dublin three to four times a day. To the rail transport in Ireland Baltinglass is no longer connected.
