The Baltschieder Glacier is a glacier north of Visp at the head of the Baltschiedertal in the southern Bernese Alps , in the Swiss canton of Valais, which has meanwhile broken up into two independent sections . The total area of both sub-areas was given in 1993 as 7.42 km². The southwestern part of the Outer Baltschieder Glacier on the eastern flank of the Bietschhorn ( 3934  m above sea level ) is significantly larger and around three kilometers long. The Inner Baltschieder Glacier , about half its size, is around 2.5 km long.

The Outer Baltschieder Glacier has its starting point on the ridge between the Bietschhorn in the west and the Breitlauihorn ( 3655  m above sea level ) in the east. The Baltschiederjoch (about 3300 m), the gap between the Bietschhorn and the Elferrück , a pre-summit of the Breitlauihorn, the Äussere Baltschiedergletscher forms an ice divide with the Uistre and Innre Stampbachgletscher on the southern side of the Lötschental . The glacier, which is quite wide in the upper part (over 2 km), flows south-east down the steep slope.

The Inner Baltschieder Glacier has its origin in two karen on the southern flank of Breitlauihorn and Lötschentaler Breithorn . It moves south and ends at 2600  m above sea level. M. Both glaciers feed the Baltschiederbach which in Visp in the Rhone flows. The area of the two Baltschieder glaciers, together with the Great Aletsch Glacier, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn Biosphere Reserve in December 2001 .

At an altitude of 2783  m above sea level. M. on the southern slope of the Jägihorn between the two glacier tongues is the Baltschiederklause , a hut belonging to the Swiss Alpine Club SAC. It serves as one of the starting points for climbing the Bietschhorn.
