history

Baltschug was created through the construction of the water diversion canal between 1783 and 1786. The canal was intended to prevent the area of the island from being flooded during high water so that it can be used as building land . Nevertheless, there were some floods in the 19th and 20th centuries. The most severe was the one in 1908, when the water level rose 9 meters and flooded large parts of the city. Only the regulation of the Moskva with the help of the Moscow-Volga Canal opened in 1937 was it possible to prevent further flooding.

Before 1938 there was a canal in the current course of the Krasnocholmski Bridges , which separated the southern tip with the Krasnocholm quarter (German "Red Hill") from the rest of the island.
