Outline map of the Le Maire Islands |
Bam , formerly known as Bäm or Lesson Island , is a small volcanic island in the South Pacific island state of Papua New Guinea . The approximately 3.8 km² island is located around 50 km off the east coast of New Guinea and is politically part of the East Sepik province today . The population of 1154 (2000 census) is divided between the two villages of Aruk (597) and Kulkirap (557).
Bam forms the easternmost link in the chain of the Le Maire Islands , which were discovered in 1616 by the Dutch Willem Cornelisz Schouten and Jacob Le Maire .
The approximately 685 m high stratovolcano of the island was active several times from around 1872 to 1960 - and thus also during the German colonial era .
