Bamboo Blade ( Japanese バ ン ブ ー ブ レ ー ド , Bambū Burēdo ) is a manga drawn by Masahiro Totsuka and Aguri Igarashi , which was published from December 3, 2004 to September 3, 2010 in the Japanese his manga magazine Young Gangan and also in 14 edited volumes has been published. The series tells the story of the hapless Kendo teacher Toraji Ishida, who competes with his former classmate, who is now also a Kendo teacher. Always inferior to his women's team, he has strong female offspring with Tamaki Kawazoe.

Characters

Toraji Ishida ( 石田 虎 侍 , Ishida Toraji )

Also known as Kojirō , he is a kendō teacher who also teaches politics and economics at Muroe High School. Constantly gnawing on the hunger cloth, he drags himself from one wage payment to the next and often takes his students' meals. He gets the offer of a lifetime from his former classmate: a year's supply of sushi , if his female team should win a training competition against that of his older classmate. Since then, he has made every effort to get training in the club going. The only person (Yūji Nakata) who knows the true background of his ambition calls him "pathetic".

Tamaki Kawazoe ( 川 添 珠 姫 , Kawazoe Tamaki )

She is a very small student in the first year of high school, often referred to as Tama-chan . Although she has a huge talent for kendō, she does not see it as a hobby, but something that was trained at home. Her father runs a kendo dojo and she refuses to join the school club. Nevertheless, she visits the club for a short time to drive away a few harassing young people. She has an exaggerated sense of justice and fairness, which was sparked in her by the Tokusatsu television series Blade Braver (a series in the series). Despite her age, she remained a huge fan of anime and the tokusatsu. In the team of Kojirō, which she later joins, she takes on the role of the strongest fighter.

Kirino Chiba ( 千葉 紀 梨 乃 , Chiba Kirino )

Kirino is a sophomore student and captain of the Kendo team. As an extremely energetic and enthusiastic leader, she dreams of leading the team to the national competitions. Despite her relaxed manner, she takes care of the training and is the first to use Shinai while the others are still exhausted on the floor. It is also described as the heart of the team. A characteristic of her smile is a mouth shaped like a round 'W', which is based on the representation of a smiling cat.

Miyako Miyazaki ( 宮 崎 都 , Miyazaki Miyako )

Miyako is a first-year student who is called Miya-Miya by the other students . She is presented as a very beautiful and friendly girl who, to the amazement of many, is devoted to the short and fat Danjūrō. Behind her facade, however, hides a very dark and sadistic personality, which is indicated in the drawings by a dark aura surrounding her. In this state she is capable of anything and would give free rein to her anger if she were not immediately put back into her loving personality by someone through the reputation of her nickname.

Sayako Kuwahara ( 桑 原 鞘 子 , Kuwahara Sayako )

Like Kirino, she is a second-year student who is described as very fickle as she changes interests and goals very often. She attended the Kendo club during her first year, but kept disappearing suddenly. Kirino calls her Saya again and again , while the other team members address her like a man for fun and because of her size. In her free time she maintains one relationship after the other and repeatedly falls into lovesickness, which makes it difficult for others to drag her to events on time.

Satori Azuma ( 東 聡 莉 , Azuma Satori )

Satori visited is in the first year and joins the team as the fifth and last girl. She is very talented and will soon become the second strongest fighter behind Tamaki. In school, however, she is below average and could not improve despite leaving her former Kendo club.

Yūji Nakata ( 中 田 勇 次 , Nakata Yūji )

Danjūrō ​​Eiga ( 栄 花 段 十 朗 , Eiga Danjūrō )

Danjūrō, also known as Dan-kun , is a short, fat student in the first year and the friend of Miyako, who is much taller than him and doesn't seem to suit him at all. Despite initial inspiration to want to join a ping-pong club, he ends up after discovering that there is no such club at the school in the kendō club. When asked if he might know another member for the club, to everyone's astonishment he brought Miyako with him as his girlfriend and is the real reason Miyako got involved in the sport in the first place.

The manga , written by Masahiro Totsuka and illustrated by Aguri Igarashi , was published from December 3, 2004 to September 3, 2010 in his manga magazine Young Gangan . The total of 117 chapters were also summarized in fourteen tankōbon editions published by Square Enix . Together with the 7th manga volume, a fan book was published on December 25, 2007 with the title BAMBOO BLADE フ ァ ン ブ ッ ク7.5 and together with the last volume on November 25, 2010 another fan book with the title BAMBOO BLADE フ ァ ン ブ ッ ク (祝) .

In the United States , the manga was licensed from Yen Press in 2008 and published in full in both Yen Plus magazine and fourteen edited volumes. In France the manga is published by Editions Ki-oon ; all fourteen volumes were published between September 2009 and October 2011.

AIC ASTA adapted the manga into a 26-episode anime television series that was shown in Japan from October 2, 2007 to April 2, 2008 on TV Tokyo .

The series was licensed by Funimation for the US market in 2009 and published in the form of two collection boxes and a complete edition. In the UK, the series appeared on Manga Entertainment.

In Impact magazine , Andrez Bergen described the series from AIC ASTA as a surprise that it was actually not.
