In a bamboo bicycle , the frame , especially the frame tubes, is made of bamboo (usually Bambuseae ).

history

The first bamboo wheel was presented to the public on April 26, 1894. In the 1890s, several patents were pending for the manufacture of bamboo bicycles. John Howard of Dudley patented frame connections in 1895. George Sanders and John William Holland filed a similar patent application number GB189512173 (A) - 1896-06-22. The manufacturers Franz Grundner and Otto Lemisch from Klagenfurt patented various types of lightweight construction, including for bamboo bicycles, in 1898.

In the 2000s, the material was taken up again for aspects of sustainability .

material

Bamboo (mostly Bambuseae) is mainly used today for frame construction. Bamboo has a specific stiffness ( modulus of elasticity ) that comes very close to steel , but has only about a third of its density (depending on the grass used). In terms of static material strength, bamboo is somewhat behind aluminum and steel. In order to obtain a frame made of bamboo with the same flexural and torsional rigidity as that of steel, a tube diameter is necessary that is comparable to an aluminum frame. Since bamboo tubes are each unique, the material cross-section varies depending on the different tube thicknesses of bamboo.

So far, no fatigue fractures are known in bamboo. Since it is an organic material, however, it can mold under the influence of moisture. Bamboo does not break, but splinters if the load is too high. In contrast to steel and aluminum, bamboo is fire endangered.

The connections of the bamboo frame are usually made with several layers of fiber and epoxy resin . The connections of the frame parts are achieved with composite materials , sometimes also with flax fibers .

The advantage of bamboo for frame construction is a partially lower mass than aluminum . Bamboo frames can be repaired relatively easily if they are defective. No painting is necessary as a protective varnish . However, paintwork for visual enhancement is possible.

Manufacturer

Bamboo bicycles are now established in Germany and are manufactured in large numbers. In Germany, among others, the company "My Boo" sells bicycles with a bamboo frame. E-bikes are now also part of the range. Together with the social project "The Yonso Project" from Ghana, the frames are manufactured in Ghana. “Bambooride OG” from Austria also sells bicycles with bamboo frames in Germany. Workshops in Munich, Berlin, Cologne and some other cities also offer the opportunity to build your own framework.

At first, German materials scientists worked on the material bamboo in the 2000s and built individual bamboo wheels as unmarketable items. Sometimes workshops are being offered today to build bamboo wheels yourself.

There are three manufacturers of bamboo bicycles in Germany, the first of which has been in Bremen since 2009.

A manufacturer of e-bikes in Kobern-Gondorf is planning such a two-wheeler with a bamboo frame and 1600-watt motor (as of August 2016). He expects a high level of driving comfort, since bamboo offers better natural damping than steel. According to an initial calculation, the price should be at least 5,000 euros.
