The Banca Commerciale Italiana (COMIT) was founded in Milan on October 10, 1894 . It was founded on the initiative of a consortium of banks from Germany ( Deutsche Bank , Dresdner Bank , Bank for Trade and Industry , Bankhaus S. Bleichröder , Bankhaus Oppenheim and Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft ), Austria ( Anglo-Österreichische Bank , Wiener Bankverein and Österreichische Credit -Anstalt für Handel und Gewerbe ), Switzerland ( Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Gotthardbahn-Gesellschaft ) and France ( Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas ). A predecessor was the Società Generale di Credito Mobiliare from 1862.

COMIT became one of the largest banks in Italy . From 1905 the activities extended to Tunisia , Brazil and other countries in South America. In 1911 branches were opened in London , in 1918 in New York City and Paris . In the 1930s, began Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale with the nationalization of the banks, among which was also the COMIT, as part of their international activities through the Great Depression substantial 1929 losses suffered. According to the Italian Banking Act of 1936, it was considered a major bank of national importance together with Banco di Roma and Credito Italiano . The Second World War brought another deep break in business activity: in 1943 the branches in Berlin and Belgrade were closed.

Since 1993, the Italian government has pursued a policy that was opposite to the previous decades and it was re- privatized . In 1999 COMIT merged with Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde and Banco Ambroveneto . From 2001 the group traded as Intesa-BCI , from 2003 as Banca Intesa SpA
