Bangana behri , called Trey Pava Mook Pee (ត្រី ប៉ា វ៉ា មុខ ពីរ) in Cambodia, Pa Va Ho Kham or Pa Wa Nah Nuk in Laos, and Pla Na Nor ปลา หน้า น อ or ปลา งา in Thailand, is a medium-sized carp fish from Southeast Asia.

description

Bangana behri is characterized by its strong, compact body and its horn-like hump on the head. Its strong spawning rash on the head is also striking. The fish are gray-black in color. Bangana behri has the following fin formula : dorsal 12–13, anal 12–13. The fish are usually up to 60 centimeters long.

distribution and habitat

Bangana behri lives in the rivers of Cambodia , Laos , Thailand and Vietnam , mainly in reservoirs of the upper Mekong . There it stays in the rocky main stream of the river during the dry season and migrates into the tributaries during the floods. Ideal locations are rapids but also slow-flowing, deep storage areas. It usually does not occur in stagnant water such as ponds.

Way of life

Bangana behri is herbivorous from algae , phytoplankton and periphyton . Its migration behavior has been well studied. At the beginning of the rainy season in May to June, Bangana behri migrates upriver near the Khone Falls at approximately the same level as the Cambodian villages of Stung Treng , Sambor and Kratie to Chiang Khong in northern Thailand. The migration behavior is triggered by the rise in the water level and the clouding of the water from clear to red-brown due to sediments that have washed in. The jungle Labeo is often accompanied by other fish species on its migrations upstream, such as Labeo cf. pierrei , Cirrhinus microlepis , Labeo chrysophekadion , Cyclocheilichthys enoplus and Yasuhikotakia modesta . Overall, the fish species shows two different migrations: a migration of the young fish during the dry season and a spawning migration of the sexually mature, adult animals at the beginning of the rainy season.

use

Bangana behri is an edible fish that is freshly marketed.
