history

In 1922 A. v. Ehrfeld entered into a limited partnership with Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank under the name “Kärntner Kredit- und Wechsel-Bankgesellschaft Ehrfeld & Co”. The seat of the bank was Klagenfurt. In the same year branches were acquired in Villach and Spittal / Drau, and one year later one in Wolfsberg. At the beginning only corporate customers were looked after. After years of efforts to convert the limited partnership into a stock corporation, the "Bank for Carinthia" was founded in 1928. Despite the global crisis, the bank performed well at that time. In 1939 the company name was changed from "Bank für Kärnten" to "Bank für Kärnten Aktiengesellschaft". In 1964, the bank took up the private small credit business as a new business division and gradually expanded the branch network in the following years. From 1965 the bank cooperated with the Bausparkasse Wüstenrot. In 1970 there was a joint three-bank loan for the first time with the Bank for Upper Austria and Salzburg and the Bank for Tyrol and Vorarlberg .

Expansion beyond Carinthia

The first expansion beyond the Carinthian borders happened in 1983 with the establishment of a branch in Graz. The name of the company was changed to Bank für Kärnten und Steiermark Aktiengesellschaft (BKS) and the Alpenländische Garantie-GmbH (ALGAR) was founded in Linz. This company secured the BKS Bank, the Oberbank and the Bank für Tirol und Vorarlberg against possible defaults on large loans. From 1986 the BKS Bank ordinary shares were traded in the official market on the Vienna Stock Exchange. At that time, the share capital was divided into 3.0 million shares with a nominal value of ATS 100 each. In 1988 the company entered the leasing business and founded Drei-Banken-Versicherungs-AG with its sister banks. Two years later the first office was opened in Vienna.

In the following year, Drei-Banken-EDV GmbH (Drei-Banken-EDV GmbH was renamed 3 Banken IT GmbH in 2017) was founded with the sister banks and, according to the plans of architect Wilhelm Holzbauer, with the construction of the BKS Bank headquarters on St. Veiter Ring 43 started. The new offices were moved into on schedule in November 1993. With the conclusion of a sales and cooperation agreement for the insurance and investment fund business with the Generali Vienna Group in 1998, the bank continued to grow. After the long-standing shareholder Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank AG left the company , the Generali Group acquired around 7.44% of BKS Bank ordinary shares. International expansion began with the establishment of a representative office in Zagreb (Croatia) and the acquisition of a leasing company in Ljubljana (Slovenia), today's BKS-leasing doo
