Bannu is a city in Bannu District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in northwestern Pakistan . The city, located a little over 40 kilometers as the crow flies from the Afghan border, is important as an administrative seat and army base.

Bannu is on the direct road link between Quetta and Peshawar . The distance on this winding mountain road to Zhob ( Fort Sandeman ), the nearest town in the south, is about 330 kilometers and to Kohat in the north 125 kilometers. Another 143 kilometer long road branches off from Bannu in a south-easterly direction to Dera Ismail Khan in the Indus Valley .

The mountainous region around the city of Bannu is one of the unsafe tribal areas in which local tribal groups , the Taliban , al-Qaeda and the army are fighting. In 2007, a burqa- clad suicide bomber killed 15 people. On January 28, 2008, after fighting with the police, extremists holed up in a school and took up to 250 children hostage. On August 28, 2008, at least nine people were killed in an attack on a prisoner transport.

On April 15, 2012, at least 150 Taliban fighters armed with automatic rifles and bazookas stormed Bannu Prison and freed around 384 prisoners, including some considered very dangerous insurgents. The outnumbered attackers had withdrawn before reinforcements arrived from the army.

economy

The economy in Bannu is mainly driven by agriculture . The standard of living is very low. For example, the electricity supply is limited to around four hours a day in summer at temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius.
