Bansleben is a village on the Altenau in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony .

history

The name Banisleve means "The legacy of Bannos" ( leiba = legacy). The small town of Bansleben near Schöppenstedt is mentioned for the first time in a document dated October 18, 1121 . In it, the Bishop of Halberstadt confirms the rights and property of the "Stiftskloster St. Laurentius zu Schöningen " in the place and area . The village only got its current name Bansleben in 1550.

In the village, a medieval castle belonged to the von Weferlingen family . It stood south of Bansleben and was burned down by the citizens of Brunswick during a war-like battle in 1380 . In handwritten notes from 1808 it says:

“Hans von Weverling not only lost all his property, but also had to die a terrible death with his whole family at Bansleben Castle, where he lived. You can now see the place where the castle stood and call it the castle place. It was surrounded by a wall and a triple ditch, of which there are also traces left. The Länderey in this area is referred to as 'im Walle' ”.

Since the regional reform, which came into force on March 1, 1974, it has been part of the municipality of Kneitlingen .

politics

Since July 1, 2003 there is an official coat of arms. Heraldic description: In the blue-gold (blue-yellow) shield divided by pewter cut a rose above, below a water mill wheel in alternating colors. The present coat of arms shows five references to the history, present and future of the place:

  1. A special local feature for Bansleben is the "Kuckucksmühle", which used to be in operation on the Altenau and is now a youth home. It is represented by the water mill wheel, whereby the addition of water waves is unnecessary, because they are a matter of course for the operation of a water mill and also nothing particularly characteristic of Bansleben, because there is a river or stream in every place.
  2. There was a castle in Bansleben as early as the 13th century. It was burned down by the Brunswick in 1380. Their remains only disappeared in the 19th century. Their appearance has not been passed down, so the term castle is symbolically represented by the tinned castle wall.
  3. The builders and owners of the castle were the von Weferling family. The V. Weferling had a significant influence on the fortunes of the place for centuries as the most important landlords and feudal lords in the place.
  4. The von Weferling family had several roses in their coat of arms. One of them appears in the coat of arms of Bansleben. At the same time, it symbolizes the desire for a flourishing development and a happy future for the place.
  5. Bansleben has been part of the Duchy , Free State and District of Braunschweig for more than 800 years . To commemorate this, the coat of arms is held in the Brunswick national colors of blue and yellow. (Incidentally, gold and yellow in heraldry are synonyms, equivalent and synonymous).

Culture and sights

Bansleben Church
  • It is not known when the small Romanesque church was built. The church tower is dated 1665. In the Thirty Years' War the church tower is said to have served as a defensive tower. The church in Bansleben was consecrated again on October 19, 2003 after renovations and was named “St. Michael "baptized.
  • In the village of Altenau there was probably only one watermill 500 meters south of the village on a mill stream. Until the Thirty Years' War, which meant the end of the “Neindorfer Berg” settlement southwest of Schöppenstedt , this place was also supplied. Mills were essential for feeding the population and the army at that time and were thus preserved. In the description of the village from 1752 it says: “The watermill, which is located on the Bansleben field mark on the Altenau, is called the cuckoo mill and belongs to Lohmann's heirs and give it to princely. Chamber a basic and mill rate. … “ It is known about the mill families that in 1792 the miller Sylvester Pfeifer married a Henriette Catharina Böttcher from Schöppenstedt in Bansleben. They will probably leave the mill very soon, because in 1796 Johann Heinrich Ziegenbein from Ölper Thurme and his wife Marie Elisabeth Lohdahl from Berklingen are named as owners. One of their five children, Johann Heinrich Matthias Ziegenbein, takes over the mill. In 1854 he married Marie Elisabeth Henriette Meyer from Ampleben. They had six children. A daughter, Friederike Johanne Henriette Dorothee, stayed in the mill until her death in 1929. In 1969 the venerable old cuckoo mill was converted into a hotel and guesthouse. In 2003 the cuckoo mill houses a country café. Now it is a youth home.
