On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Barbacena and Vila Fernando were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Barbacena e Vila Fernando . Barbacena is the seat of this newly formed community.
The Anta da Coutada de Barbacena is about 3.5 km west of Barbacena, on a hill south of the Barbacena-Monforte road in a quarry. The southern half of the seven-stone chamber, with the capstone, and two of the northern gangestones have been preserved. According to Georg Leisner and Vera Leisner , the granite used does not come from the site.
