Barbara Allen Rainey (born August 20, 1948 in Bethesda , Maryland , † July 13, 1982 in Evergreen , Alabama ) was an American pilot .

Life

Barbara Allen Rainey received her "Golden Wings" on February 22nd, 1974 as the first American female naval aviator in the US Navy . She was also the first female pilot to fly a jet for the Navy.

Rainey died with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in an accident during a training flight with a Beechcraft T-34 Mentor , along with her student pilot Donald Bruce Knowlton, at Middleton Field Airport near Evergreen , Alabama .

Private life

Barbara Allen Rainey was married to John C. Rainey and had two daughters.

Trivia

The two surviving dependents, John C. Rainey and Rondi Knowlton, sued Beech Aircraft Corporation for product liability in a year-long lawsuit . The case ended in the Supreme Court in 1988 and entered the United States Report's rulings under number 488 US 153 .
