Barbara Bayer
Barbara Bayer , née Nasler (born May 25, 1827 in Lubenz ( Lubenec ) near Luditz ( Žlutice ) in West Bohemia ; † October 18, 1887 in Karlsbad ) was a baker and the first producer of the Karlovy Vary wafers .
Life
Barbara Nasler came to the health resort of Karlsbad as a young woman, married the police officer Michael Bayer (born September 29, 1812 in Amplatz ( Oplot )), founded the first commercial wafer bakery in Karlsbad in 1867 and made the "Karlsbader Oblaten - Barbara Bayer “A specialty of the health resort. They were thin slices of unleavened flour dough without the addition of leavening agents. They were baked between hot, round iron plates about 18 centimeters in diameter and were made with the health- promoting Carlsbad sparkling saltseasoned and refined with ground nuts and almonds. The wafer-thin baked goods came onto the market with an embossed company name. It was only slightly sweetened and smelled of browned butter. In Karlsbad, discerning spa guests were the first enthusiastic customers. In 1876, Kaiser Wilhelm I began to appreciate the Karlovy Vary wafers and Barbara Bayer was awarded the title of Imperial Prussian purveyor to the court in 1884 .
progeny
After Barbara Bayer passed away in 1887, Karl Bayer (* Karlsbad August 9, 1856) took over the manufacture of wafers according to the secret recipe. After the construction of a manufacturing plant in 1899, the customer base of this Karlovy Vary specialty expanded to include European princes and royalty and the imperial family of the Habsburgs in Vienna. Karl Bayer received the title of imperial purveyor to the court . Medals and honorary diplomas followed and the "Karlsbader Oblaten" became a popular gift item in general. The production survived the First World War and the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy with the absence of regular customers. The range has been switched to inexpensive offers. At the end of the Second World War, on April 19, 1945, the Bayer family's bakery was hit by fire bombs during a US air raid on Karlsbad.
Production in Geretsried
In 1946, the owners of the large-scale bakery "Karlsbader Oblaten" were expropriated as Germans on the basis of the Beneš decrees in favor of Czechoslovakia . The Bayer family came to Geretsried in Upper Bavaria as displaced persons . The married couple Herbert and Wilma Bayer dared to start anew with the original recipe of the "Karlsbader Oblaten". Spa wafers are sold online today, but also in Karlovy Vary ( Karlsbad offered freshly prepared) of small and micro bakers sold on the street. With the Becherovka , a follow-up drink to the “Karlsbader Becherbitter”, you remember Barbara Bayer and the pharmacist Josef Vitus Becher .
Over the years there has been a dispute between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic over a legally secure use of the name "Karlsbader Oblaten", in Czech "Karlovarské oplatky". The designation has been a protected geographical designation of origin in German since 2011.
