Barbara Gowdy (born June 25, 1950 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a Canadian English-language writer .

Life

Gowdy grew up in Windsor, and since 1954 in Toronto . She studied music ( piano ) and theater studies at York University and the Royal Conservatory of Music. She worked as a publishing editor at Lester and Orpen Dennys and taught creative writing at the University of Toronto . She also conducted interviews for TVOntario . She has been working as a freelance writer since 1979.

Gowdy's work deals with the outsiders of society with a conscious look at the extreme, the alien and the abnormal.

Gowdy lives in Toronto with her family. Her longtime partner is the writer Christopher Dewdney .
