Scotiabank Giller Prize
The Scotiabank Giller Prize or Giller Prize (English Scotiabank Giller Prize ) is a Canadian literary prize that has been awarded exclusively to Canadian authors since 1994. It recognizes novels and collections of short stories that were published in English (including translations) in the previous year.
description
The founder of the Giller Prize is the Canadian businessman Jack Rabinovitch. In honor of his late wife, Doris Giller, a former Toronto Star literary editor , he donated Canadian dollars 25,000 in prize money each November .
The Canadian Scotiabank has been donating all of the prize money since 2005. By 2008, the top five a total of 50,000 were US dollars , of which US $ 40,000 to the award-winning author and each $ 2,500 to the four nominees shortlisted. The name of the award was officially changed to Scotiabank Giller Prize.
Since 2006, in addition to the shortlist, a longlist consisting of no fewer than 10 and no more than 15 titles has been published in advance. In 2008, the prize pool increased to $ 50,000 for the winner and $ 5,000 for each shortlisted nominee, and doubled in 2014 to $ 100,000 for the winner and $ 10,000 for each of the four nominees, making the giller Prize, with a total of $ 140,000, became the highest endowed Canadian literary prize.

criticism
In 2006, Canadian columnist Stephen Henighan criticized the Giller Prize. In his opinion, the trend towards the centralization of Canadian publishers is leading to monopoly control of Bertelsmann AG , as the Bertelsmann Group publishers Knopf Canada , Doubleday Canada and Random House Canada, all based in Toronto , often have titles on the shortlist are.
Henighan's article sparked a lively debate in the media and the general public about the credibility of the Giller Prize.
