Marina Endicott
Marina Endicott (born September 14, 1958 in Golden , British Columbia , Canada ) is a Canadian writer who writes novels and short stories . Her second novel, Good to a Fault , won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Canada and the Caribbean in 2009 and was shortlisted for the Giller Prize . She used to work as an actress and dramaturge .
Life
Marina Endicott was born in Golden, British Columbia, in 1958 and grew up in Halifax and Yarmouth , Nova Scotia , and Toronto , Ontario .
She worked as an actress before moving to London , England , where she turned to writing. She returned to Canada in 1984, where she worked in Saskatoon as a theater director and dramaturge . For several years she was the dramaturge at the Saskatchewan Playwrights Center. She moved to western Canada in 1992 when she followed her husband Peter Ormshaw to Mayerthorpe , Alberta , where he began his service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police . They have since lived in Cochrane and Edmonton and have two children. They currently live in Edmonton, Alberta.
When asked why Endicott changed her career path, she replied, “Being an actor isn't an easy life. The work is so ephemeral ... I write novels instead of plays because I like the intimate link of the silent writer and the silent reader ".
Endicott's first short story was published in 1985. Their stories were summarized in the Coming Attractions anthology and shortlisted for the Journey Prize in 1993. Her first novel, Open Arms (2001), was a finalist for the Amazon.ca / Books in Canada First Novel Award and was auditioned on CBC Radio's Between the Covers 2003. Her long poem about the Mayerthorpe Incident, Mayerthorpe, was shortlisted for the 2006 CBC Literary Award. Her third novel, The Little Shadows , published in 2011 by Doubleday , was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award for Fiction.
