Barbara Guest
Barbara Guest (born September 6, 1920 in North Carolina ; † February 15, 2006 ; born Barbara Ann Pinson ) was an American poet , writer and art critic who is often associated with the New York School .
She was born in North Carolina and raised in California . Guest studied at the University of California at Berkeley , where he graduated with a BA in 1943 . She lived for a long time in New York , where she was one of the poets of the New York School with Frank O'Hara , John Ashbery , James Schuyler and Kenneth Koch . She is also known as the author of a biography of the poet HD , Herself Defined: The Poet HD and Her World (1984). In 1999 she was awarded the Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement by the Poetry Society of America . Most recently she lived in Berkeley again, where she died in 2006.
