Barbara Haeger (born November 26, 1919 in Loslau ; † June 2004 in Hamburg ) was a German sculptor , painter , graphic artist and poet .

Life

Barbara Heger studied sculpture 1938–1939 at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, 1939–1941 at the Dresden Academy , 1941–1943 at the Berlin Art Academy and 1948–1949 at the Hamburg State Art School with Edwin Scharff ; there together with Ursula Querner and Maria Pirwitz . From 1953 she had her studio in Hamburg, from 1965 in Paris , from 1970 in New York and from 1980 again in Hamburg.

She presented u. a. in Hamburg, Munich, Paris, London, New York, Mexico, Santa Cruz and Dar es Salaam. Bronze sculptures by Barbara Haeger can be found in Hamburg near the Grindel tower blocks , at the former main church St. Nikolai memorial and in the Christianeum .

In her artistic development she refrained from erecting bronze figures in front of the houses being rebuilt and from wanting to erect concrete walls in the architecture of a prosperous society. At the end of the 1950s, apparently under the impression of Henry Moore , she broke away from figurative reality and began to abstract human body shapes. After 1970, Barbara Haeger worked in New York with plexiglass, metal and found objects. Her jewelry has been featured in Vogue fashion magazine and several New York art magazines. From 1980 onwards she increasingly dealt with the destruction of human form, human dignity, and annihilation as the great theme of the 20th century, which she artistically implemented as the "destruction of form". She chose epoxy resin as the material, which was applied to a metal frame. Between 1965 and 1995, around fifty sculptures, some of a bizarre shape and space-filling dimensions, were created.

Haeger went on extensive study trips to the Middle East, Morocco, Israel, Central and Latin America and Africa. She lived and worked for several years in Paris, New York, Bolivia and Mexico and gave workshops on sculpture.
