Barbara Amy Felicity Smith, 14. Baroness Dudley (* 23. April 1907 , † 27. May 2002 in Kempsey , county Worcestershire ) was a British Peeress and politician of the Conservative Party .

Life

Barbara Smith, 14th Baroness Dudley was born as the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinando Smith, 12th Baron Dudley (1872-1936) and his wife Sybil Augusta Coventry († 1958). She inherited on April 19, 1972 after the death of her younger, childless brother Ferdinando Smith, 13th Baron Dudley (1910-1972) the title of 14th Baroness Dudley , which was created in 1440 in the Peerage of England . The barony had been in Abeyance since 1757 and was summoned to Parliament by writ on May 9, 1916 at the request of Ferdinando Smith, 12th Baron Dudley, the father of Barbara Amy Felicity Smith .

Smith worked as an artist . She painted watercolors , mostly with floral designs . Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Watercolor Society . She died on May 27, 2002 at the age of 95 on her estate in Kempsey, Worcestershire. The memorial service was held on May 31, 2002 at St Denys's Church in Severn Stoke .

Membership in the House of Lords

Inheriting the title of Baroness Dudley, Smith became a member of the House of Lords on April 19, 1972 . She was a member of the House of Lords from April 19, 1972 to November 11, 1999. In the House of Lords she sat for the Conservative Party . Her inaugural address in the House of Lords was on March 17, 1976 as part of a debate on growing fruit and vegetables in allotments and on the allocation of agricultural land. Smith was an active member of the House of Lords. In the Hansard , a total of more than 20 contributions by Barbara Amy Felicity Smith, 14th Baroness Dudley in the period from 1976 to 1990 are documented. On July 23, 1990, she spoke for the last time in the debate on AIDS with a brief question.

Their membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 . She did not run for one of the remaining seats, probably for reasons of age. She did not belong to the Hereditary Peers Association .

Private

Barbara Amy Felicity Smith, 14th Baroness Dudley, was married twice. On August 22, 1929 she married Guy Raymond Hill Wallace († 1967), the son of Major General Hill Wallace's first marriage. Her husband came from Astley in the county of Worcestershire and was a member of the Royal Horse Artillery . Their first marriage had four children, three sons and, as their youngest child, a daughter. On February 22, 1980, she married Charles Anthony Crosse Hamilton for the second time. She carried the family name Hamilton until her death . Title heir is her eldest son, the Hon. Jim Anthony Hill Wallace, now 15th Lord Dudley (* 1930).
