The Naumburg Group (so named after a burial ground in Naumburg ) is an archaeological culture that dates back to around 300 BC. Until about 60 BC BC ( Iron Age ) is dated. The previous culture was the Early Iron Age Thuringian culture from 750 BC. Until 300 BC Chr., Whose grave fields the Naumburg group continued to use.

distribution

The Naumburg group was widespread from the Thuringian Basin to the central Saale region. In the north there was predominantly the Jastorf culture and, occasionally, the Przeworsk culture and from 150 BC. The Wahlitz group also sporadically .

In contrast to the Thuringian culture, a uniformity of consumer goods is evident among the carriers of the Naumburg Group. For example with the innovatively shaped vessels on the potter's wheel, which are based on Celtic models, such as the terrines. The manufacture of non-ferrous metal jewelry was also based on models from the neighboring Celts to the south.

On the grave fields of this group there are also graves of the Jastorf culture, probably newcomers who lived with the local population without giving up their own northern roots. Since about 85 BC The construction of graves decreases. Research assumes that this results from an emigration of the Naumburg group's sponsors to southeast Bavaria.

The region north of the Thuringian Forest and the Ore Mountains - the settlement area of the Naumburg Group - was known to Ptolemy as the "Home of the Teurians" - Teuriochaimai - in the 2nd century AD . According to the archaeologists from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archeology in Saxony-Anhalt , this is the first time that a local archaeological culture can be combined with an ancient tribal name.

funeral

The cremation is similar to that of the Thuringian culture. In contrast to that culture, disk-turned terrines and later bottle-shaped vessels were used as urns.
