Barbara Imperiali
Barbara Imperiali (born January 1, 1957 ) is a British - American chemist .
Imperiali earned a bachelor's degree in medicinal chemistry from University College London in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1983 from Satoru Masamune (1928–2003) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with his thesis Synthesis of ansamycins : the ansa chain of Rifamycin S. in synthetic organic chemistry . She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at MIT with Masamune and at Brandeis University with Robert H. Abeles . In 1986 she received her first professorship (Assistant Professor) at Carnegie Mellon University , and in 1989 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). In 1995 she became an Associate Professor at Caltech , and in 1997 she was given a full professorship. In 1999 she moved back to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Here she is (as of 2017) Class of 1922 Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Biology . Since 2011 she has also been a member of the Broad Institute , a joint institution of MIT and Harvard University . In 1993 she became a Sloan Research Fellow .
Imperiali's group deals with various aspects of protein structure , function and design . Fundamental questions on the boundary between chemistry and biology are approached with a multidisciplinary approach consisting of synthesis , molecular modeling , enzymology and molecular biology . In particular, Imperiali and co-workers deal with the post-translational modification of proteins and here again with the focus on enzyme-controlled glycosylation .
In 2001 Imperiali was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2010 to the National Academy of Sciences .
