Barbara Jeppe (born May 21, 1921 in Pilgrim's Rest ; † June 20, 1999 in Johannesburg ) was a South African painter who mainly made botanical illustrations.

Life

Barbara Jeppe was born to Victor Brereton, a land surveyor , and Gladys Evans.

She was married to the psychiatrist Carl Louis Jeppe. The couple had four children together, Leigh, Marie, Carl and David. She made her first illustration in the book Trees and Shrubs of the Witwatersrand (Witwatersrand University Press) in the field of botanical art.

Over a period of three years, she spent a total of one year at the Cape of Good Hope , where she created illustrations and texts for her book about bulbs on the Cape. This passion for flower bulbs resulted in the publication of Spring and Winter Flowering Bulbs of the Western Cape (Oxford University Press). Her significant work on the Amaryllidaceae in collaboration with Piet Vorster remains unpublished and will be completed by her daughter, Leigh Voigt.

In addition to her botanical illustrations, Barbara Jeppe loved painting butterflies for friends and family. Occasionally she also painted landscapes.

She received the Cythna Letty Gold Medal from the Botanical Society of South Africa in 1990 for her contribution to botanical illustration in South Africa and another award from the South African Nurserymen's Association . The Transvaal Horticultural Society awarded her the silver medal in 1991.

She died in Johannesburg at the age of 78 of complications from pneumonia.
