Since 1997 she was a member and since 2000 deputy chairwoman of the youth organization of Unia Pracy (Labor Union) and 2001-2006 member of this party. She took part in pacifist street demonstrations against the Iraq war and the Afghan war . In 2005 she co-founded the Young Socialist Movement.
After her mother's death, she founded the Izabela Jaruga Nowacka Foundation, which awards the Okulary Równości (German: Equal Opportunity Glasses ) prize every year .

In 2015, Barbara Nowacka took over the leadership of the newly founded United Left , which narrowly missed entry with 7.55% in the parliamentary elections in October 2015 .
After the alliance was discontinued due to the displeasure of some big parties, Nowacka and other (ex) members of left parties presented the non-partisan platform Inicjatywa Polska (Initiative Poland) at the end of February 2016 in order to continue the idea of cooperation between left-wing and liberal groups.
Foreign Policy ranked Nowacka together with Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk among the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” in 2016 for this commitment.
At the beginning of June 2017, she announced that she would be leaving the Twój Ruch party in order to become more involved in women's rights in Poland in the future. In September 2018 she joined the citizen coalition.
In the parliamentary elections on October 13, 2019, she was elected Sejm MP for the 9th legislative period in the constituency of Gdynia with 88,833 votes.
