Janusz Palikot (2015)

Janusz Marian Palikot ([ ˈjanuʂ paˈlʲikɔt ]; born October 26, 1964 in Biłgoraj ) is a Polish entrepreneur, politician ( TR , formerly PO ) and chairman and founder of Twój Ruch , for whom he also sat in the Sejm .

Life

Janusz Palikot grew up in his birthplace Biłgoraj in southeast Poland and went to school there. During high school, he moved to Warsaw . After graduating from high school, he wanted to study mathematics, but for practical reasons decided to study philosophy at the Catholic University of Lublin . He graduated from the University of Warsaw with a master's degree in philosophy . He then worked as a lecturer at the Polish Academy of Sciences . After the political change, Palikot founded the sparkling wine manufacturer Ambra ( Cydr Lubelski ) in 1990 and the Jabłonna joint-stock company, which also specializes in alcohol production, in 2001 .

Palikot has two children with his first wife and also with his second.

Political career

Palikot was elected to the Sejm for the first time in the parliamentary elections in Poland in 2005 as a member of the Platforma Obywatelska (German citizens' platform ) . He received 26,275 votes in constituency 6 in Lublin . In the early parliamentary elections in Poland in 2007 , Palikot ran again in constituency 6 in Lublin and was able to win a mandate for the Sejm with 44,186 votes. From 2007 to 2008 he worked in the Sejm commissions for culture and mass media and relations with Poland abroad . From 2008 to 2010 he was a leader in the Sejm Commission on Bureaucracy Reduction - Friendly State and the Constitutional Commission. For his services to the city, Palikot was made an honorary citizen of Biłgoraj on July 25, 2008.

Within the citizens' platform , which can be viewed as liberal-conservative in the political spectrum, Palikot belonged to the left or anti-clerical wing. As a member of the Sejm, he campaigned nationwide for a liberalization of Polish abortion regulations , called for the public influence of the Catholic Church to be limited and for in vitro fertilization to be legalized in Poland. Most of these demands are made by the social democratic camp of the Polish parties.

On October 2, 2010, Palikot founded the left-liberal citizens 'movement Nowoczesna Polska (German: Modern Poland ) and announced that he would be leaving the citizens' platform at the beginning of December 2010. On October 18, 2010 he finally founded the movement named after him in support of Palikot (Polish: Ruch poparcia Palikota ). On January 10, 2011, he prematurely resigned from his seat as a member of the Sejm. On June 1, 2011, he registered a new party with the name Ruch Palikota (Eng. Palikot Movement ) at the competent Warsaw court . In the parliamentary elections in Poland on October 9, 2011 , his party got 10.1 percent of the vote and is represented by 40 members of the Sejm. In the Sejm and in the media, Palikot violently attacked the Polish bishops and the late Polish Pope. There were immediate disputes within the newly founded party. Palikot first attacked the deputy Sejm Marshal Wanda Nowicka . As a result of the conflict, many MPs left his party, so that at the end of the legislative period Palikot remained with very few MPs. The renaming of the party to “Twój Ruch” (Your Movement) did not help.

In 2013/14, together with MEP Marek Siwiec and Poland's former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski, he supported the Europa Plus initiative , which was disbanded after it failed in the European elections in May 2014 .

In December 2014, he announced that he was running for the 2015 presidential election, which political scientist Aleks Szczerbiak sees as the “last contingent” (' last hurray ') of his volatile political career. In the presidential election on May 10, 2015, Palikot reached 7th place with 1.42 percent of the vote. That practically means the end of his Sejm career. But he helped some hitherto unknown people to a political career: the journalist Andrzej Rozenek , the transsexual Anna Grodzka , the homosexual Robert Biedroń , who was elected mayor of Słupsk and the Sejm Vice Marshal Wanda Nowicka .

Due to the very low poll numbers for the upcoming parliamentary elections in autumn 2015 , his party formed the electoral alliance Zjednoczona Lewica (United Left) together with the SLD and other left-wing parties in July in order to secure his stay in the Sejm. His co-chair, Barbara Nowacka , was the top candidate, and Palikot himself stayed out of the election campaign. With an election result of 7.55%, the left-wing coalition narrowly missed re-entry.

Political controversy

Janusz Palikot caused numerous controversies in Poland. At a press conference of the citizens' platform in April 2007 he wore a T-shirt that read I am gay ( Jestem gejem in Polish ) and I am from the SLD (pl. Jestem z SLD ). He later said that he wanted to show that the Civic Platform had to protect these groups as minorities. A few days later he came to a press conference with a vibrator and a toy gun. He said "... these are the symbols of law and justice in Poland today and these are the symbols of the police in Lublin" . He was referring to allegations of violence and sexual abuse by Lublin police officers.

On the Polish news channel TVN24 , he said in July 2008 that he thought the Polish President Lech Kaczyński was a bully. Insulting the Polish President can be punished with up to three years in prison. President's brother Jarosław Kaczyński told the news channel that he was calling for the Sejm to lift Palikot's immunity. Another time, Palikot appeared in the TV studio with a severed pig's head. His television interviews often embarrassed the Civic Platform party leadership .

In his personal blog in January 2009, he asked whether Jarosław Kaczyński, Prime Minister of Poland from 2006 to 2007, was gay.

In response to information about the purchase of large quantities of alcohol by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland , Palikot held a happening in front of his house in April 2009. Palikot drank alcohol and distributed it to passers-by. He repeatedly asked President Kaczyński about excessive alcohol consumption. On April 26, 2010, Palikot was sentenced by the Lublin District Court to a fine of 1200 złoty for drinking alcohol in public places.

His sensational appearances led to the emergence of the term Palikotyzacja ( Eng . Palicotization ) for vulgar or unusual appearances and statements in Poland .

In the Sejm, Palikot is considered an enfant terrible . With an estimated fortune of 330 million zloty in 2006 (about 80 million euros), he is the richest Polish MP.
