Biłgoraj [ bʲiwˈgɔraj ] is a city in Poland in the Lublin Voivodeship , about 90 km south of Lublin .
history
The first permanent settlements in the area of today's Biłgoraj emerged in 1366. The actual place was founded in 1578 by Stefan Batory . In 1648 the place was occupied by the Tatars and in 1655 it was largely destroyed during the war against Sweden. From 1772 to 1776 Biłgoraj was under Austrian rule, in 1792 it fell to Russia, only to belong to Austria again only three years later. In 1809 the place became part of the Principality of Warsaw and in 1815 part of the newly created Congress Poland . In 1867 the place became the seat of a powiat . During the First World War , the place was destroyed.
Before the Second World War , 5010 Jews and 3175 non-Jewish Poles lived in Biłgoraj ( see Biłgoraj Synagogue and New Jewish Cemetery (Biłgoraj) ).
During the German invasion of Poland , the place was bombed on September 8th and 11th, 1939 and burned down. On July 4, 1944, partisans who had been captured by Operation Stormwind II were shot dead in the forest near the village. At the end of the war, almost 80% of the place was destroyed and the population was only 4,500.
