Marek Maciej Siwiec (born March 13, 1955 in Piekary Śląskie ) is a Polish politician. From 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the Sejm and from 2004 to 2014 a member of the European Parliament , of which he was deputy chairman from 2007 to 2009.

Political career

Siwiec first studied physics at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow , then also journalism . In 1977 he joined the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). Between 1987 and 1990 he was also editor-in-chief of the weekly “ITD”.

After the political upheaval, he co-founded the Social Democratic Party of the Republic of Poland (SdRP) and was also the first editor-in-chief of the daily “ Trybuna ”. At the same time he was a member of the Sejm , one of the two chambers of the Polish parliament, from 1991 to 1997 . From 1996 he also worked as State Secretary in the Chancellery of the President and in 1997 Head of the Office for National Security. From 2007 to 2012 he held the post of deputy chairman of the Federation of Democratic Left (SLD).

Siwiec caused a stir in 1997 when, after his helicopter landed in Kalisz, in the presence of then President Aleksander Kwaśniewski , he kneeled down in front of the cameras and kissed the lawn. The joking gesture was denounced by conservative politicians as blasphemy from the Pope.

After Poland joined the European Union , Siwiec was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 with 36,985 votes , and in 2009 he secured his mandate with 64,976 votes. In 2014 he only got 17,399 votes and left the European Parliament after ten years.

Between 2013 and 2014 Siwiec supported the cross-party political initiative Europa Plus together with Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Janusz Palikot . Since 2014 he has been deputy chairman of the Your Movement (TR) party.

He is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .

Siwiec lives in Warsaw .
