Robert Biedroń (born April 13, 1976 in Rymanów ) is a Polish politician and publicist . The former Member of the Sejm was from 2014 to 2018 Mayor of the city of Slupsk and since 2019 chairman of the co-initiated by him party Wiosna . He is the best known politician in Poland who is openly gay .

Life

Biedroń comes from the Subcarpathian Mountains and grew up in Krosno . After graduating from high school, he studied political science in Olsztyn and Vienna and began a doctorate in Pułtusk in 2006 . He also worked as a publisher before joining the social democratic party Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej (SLD). In 2010, however, he switched to the left-wing liberal party Twój Ruch (TR) around the entrepreneur Janusz Palikot . In the 2011 parliamentary elections , he succeeded in entering the Sejm , the Polish lower house, for the constituency in Gdynia . In this he was the first openly homosexual member. In 2014 he was honored as Best Member of the Year by the Polish weekly magazine Polityka . Since coming out , he has been the victim of homophobic attacks several times and has been the subject of hate speech by some representatives of the Catholic Church . Biedroń is an atheist .

On November 16, 2014, Biedroń received 20 percent of the votes in the first round of the mayoral election (see municipal elections 2014 ) in Słupsk and was finally elected mayor in the run-off on November 30, 2014 with 57.1 percent of the votes cast. He received several awards for the implementation of his political agenda and his leadership style and was named the country's third most popular politician in 2015. In the wake of the political crisis surrounding the national-conservative party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (PiS), which has ruled since 2015 , he supported the civil rights movement of activist Mateusz Kijowski, which was critical of the government . In the Polish press he is seen as a beacon of hope for the political left in Poland.

On February 3, 2019, Biedroń founded the Wiosna ( Eng . "Spring") party, which had already stood in the 2019 European elections and won 6.06% of the vote in Poland. Biedroń himself was elected to the European Parliament at number 1 in his party's list. In the presidential election in Poland in 2020 , he ran as a joint candidate of the political left for the parties Wiosna, SLD, Razem and the Polish socialists , but clearly missed the run-off election that had become necessary.

Awards

On July 20, 2016, Biedroń was awarded the Ordre national du Mérite , France's National Order of Merit.
