The Barbarasiedlung in Munich was built between 1909 and 1918 for employees of the military clothing office; it is also known as the military housing complex in Barbarastraße .

Location and building

The Barbarasiedlung is located in the Schwabing district in Munich's district 4 Schwabing-West on a triangle formed by Barbara-, Infanterie- and Schwere-Reiter-Straße. A small private road leads through the settlement. The one to four family houses with front and kitchen gardens are to be assigned to the Heimatschutz style; the plans come from Georg Besold, a preliminary draft from Richard Beetz.

The garden city character of the small settlement is emphasized by the uniform conception; the use of different house sizes and shapes - some with wood paneling, others in timber frame construction - with changing roof shapes gives it a relaxed impression.

The entire facility is under ensemble protection.

history

For the so-called economic craftsmen of the Corps clothing office - craftsmen and civil servants with a very short basic military training , legally soldiers, but in civilian use - there was a service building on the premises of the Oberwiesenfeld barracks district , but this soon became insufficient as more and more employees had families. The first twelve houses in the necessary settlement - with space for 36 families - were built between 1909 and 1910. Each house had a laundry room and an enamel tub in the basement. Even before the end of the First World War , more houses were added on Schwere-Reiter-Strasse. Two somewhat larger apartment blocks in a matching style were built in 1916.

The settlement is owned by the Free State of Bavaria . From 1986 it was extensively renovated under the direction of Hans Korn, and in 1993 it received an award in the Munich facade competition.
