Barbatula zetensis is a benthic freshwater fish species of the genus Barbatula from the family of loach (Nemacheilidae). The species was only described in 2001. It only occurs in Montenegro .

features

Loach are benthic (demersal) fish with inferior mouth and six Barteln , as tactile and taste organs serve. The fish have a long, yellowish and dark-marbled body with a standard length of no more than 6.6 cm. The animals can live up to two years.

As with most members of the genus Barbatula , the caudal fin is slightly concave and is supported by 15-16 soft rays. The tail stalk is 1.4-1.8 times as long as it is wide. The pelvic fins begin at the level of the second to fourth soft ray of the dorsal fin . There are 2-4 dark spots between the neck and the base of the dorsal fin.

Distribution and Biology

The species occurs only in the lower reaches of the Morača , a Montenegrin river that drains into Lake Skadar and thus belongs to the Adriatic Basin . It was also found in its tributary Zeta , but otherwise in no other tributary of the Morača. The species is relatively common in its range.

Little is known about the way of life. The species prefers flowing water sections with stony and gravelly substrate and low vegetation density. It occurs, among other things, together with the Ohrid loach , a fish from the Cobitidae family that also lives on the ground . However, since it prefers sandy subsoil and is often between algae, the two species seem to have little competition with each other.

The species is classified by the IUCN as " Least Concern " ( LC ). However, as the range is very small, local water pollution and anthropogenic habitat changes could pose a threat to this species in the future.
