Barbatula is a genus of benthic freshwater fish from the family of the brook loach (Nemacheilidae). The genus is native to Europe and Asia . Barbatula barbatula is common in large parts of Europe, while the occurrence of the other species is limited to much smaller areas. The genus contains the only European cave fish that was discovered in the Aachtopf in 2015.

features

The animals have a cylindrical, elongated body and small eyes that are located high up on the body. The mouth is below and surrounded by 6 barbels , with which they track down invertebrates living on the ground and on which they feed. The yellow body is more or less strongly marbled. In contrast to the genus Oxynoemacheilus , which also occurs in Europe , the tail fin ends at most slightly concave and is supported by 15-16 soft rays (17 in Oxynoemacheilus ).
