Barbatula sturanyi is a benthic freshwater fish species of the genus Barbatula from the family of loach (Nemacheilidae). The species was described in 1892 and is found in North Macedonia and Albania .

features

As is typical for the genus Barbatula , the animals have an elongated, slender body with a gray-yellow basic color and irregular spots along the body flanks. The mouth of the animals is below and surrounded by 6 barbels . In contrast to some other species of this genus, the caudal fin is not bulged in Barbatula sturanyi . The dorsal fin begins just before the attachment of the pectoral fins . The tail stalk is 1.6-2.1 times as long as it is wide. The animals reach a standard length of up to 10 cm.

Ecology and diffusion

The animals living on the ground use their barbels to search for invertebrates to feed on. They live at the source sections along the coasts of Lake Ohrid and in the upper reaches of its outflow, the Black Drin , in river sections with stony substrate . The biology of the animals has practically not been researched, but should be similar to that of the brook loach.

Barbatula sturanyi is classified by the IUCN as “ Least Concern ” ( LC ).
