Occurrence

The moss colonizes moist, heavily calcareous soils and is therefore often to scattered in Germany. In cracks in the rock and wall it can rise to over 2500 m. Otherwise it can be found at the edges of roads and ditches, in fields and rarely also on dry limestone grass. Its distribution is limited to the northern hemisphere. It occurs in Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America.

features

The pointed-leaved mustache moss grows in green to slightly tanned lawns and forms stems up to 3 cm high. The characteristic tongue-shaped leaves are protruding upright when moist (sparse), but appear twisted when dry. The midrib emerges from the tip of the leaf in the form of a short spiked tip. In contrast to other representatives of the genus Barbula , the leaf margin is only rolled over in the middle leaf section. The upper lamina cells are rounded to square in shape, papillary and gradually merge into the rectangular, transparent to water-white cells that are elongated at the base of the leaf. The red seta has upright, cylindrically shaped capsules that have 3 to 4 times left-wound peristome teeth.
