It is located in the north of the Guarda district , in the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional directly on the border with Spain on the Rio Águeda and Douro rivers . The Douro River is partially navigable as far as Barca d'Alva, and there is a pier. A bridge, the Ponte Almirante Sarmento Rodrigues , crosses the Douro here.

history

In 1887 the Linha do Douro railway line was completed in Barca d'Alva , and it reached a total length of 200 km on the bridge over the Rio Águeda. At that time, this railway line connected the city of Porto via Barca d'Alva with the Spanish city of Salamanca . The Barca d'Alva border station was of great importance for through traffic. In 1985, the Barca d'Alva – La Fuente de San Esteban railway section was closed. Barca d'Alva lost its international connection by rail.

Today the station building is abandoned. For some time, efforts have been made to provide a cycle path from the old route from Pocinho to Barca d'Alva. The project is called Ecovia, with Brisa being the main partner.
