Baretta is an American crime series that was produced between 1975 and 1978. Robert Blake played the title role, the idea for the series came from Stephen J. Cannell .

The New York Police Officer Tony Baretta often works as Undercover . As an unconventional loner and outsider, he is not squeamish in the choice of his methods, which repeatedly causes him problems with his superiors and often brings him into dangerous situations.

When Baretta is not investigating undercover, he lives with his cockatoo Fred in a hotel run by ex-cop Billy Truman , which has seen better days. His wheeled pedestal is a badly rusted 1966 Chevrolet Impala . Baretta gets help from his informants Rooster and Fats , who keep him informed about what is going on on the streets of New York. In the first twelve episodes, his superior Lt. Shiller, then Lt. Hal Brubaker.

The series Baretta was launched by the broadcaster ABC as the successor to the similarly conceived crime series Toma after its main actor Tony Musante had surprisingly announced his departure after the end of the first season.

The theme song Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow was initially an instrumental track , however, then a text has been added, and the title of Sammy Davis, Jr. interpreted. The single reached first place in the singles charts in the Netherlands and Sweden .
