Barnard Medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barnard Medal for Meritorious Service to Science (originally: Barnard Medal for Meritorious Service to Science ) is awarded every five years by Columbia University in the City of New York .

The biographer JN Howard said of the Barnard Medal in 1967: "It is a larger piece of gold, but certainly not as well known as the Nobel Prize ."

This award should not be confused with the Barnard Medal of Distinction , the highest honor awarded by Barnard College , New York.

Origin and goal

Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard (May 5, 1809, † April 27, 1889) was an American scientist and educationalist. In 1864 he became the tenth president of Columbia University .

In his will he ordered the establishment of a medal for special services to science.
May the gold medal "cost no less than $ 200" and become known as the Barnard Medal for Meritorious Service to Science . May the medal go to those, whether US citizens or from any other country, who have made a discovery in the field of physics or astronomy or discovered unusual uses of science for the benefit of mankind in the past five years .

An investment fund was set up for this purpose. The Bernard Medal mutual fund agent is a Columbia University committee.

Nomination and selection

The procedure stipulates that the National Academy of Sciences (German: US Academy of Sciences) suggests the most suitable candidate. The candidate will then be reviewed by the Columbia University agents, who, if approved, will award the medal.

layout

The medal was created by Tiffany & Co. in New York in 1894 . It is round and has a diameter of 75 mm. On the front it is decorated with the figure of Columbia , who is holding a laurel wreath and an oil lamp, surrounded by two river deities. Barnard has decreed that it should bear the inscription on the front: “Magna est veritas” (German: Big is the truth), on the back: “Deo optimo maximo, gloria in excelsis.” (German: To the great Lord be honor in the height)
