Barnett Slepian
Barnett Slepian ( October 21, 1946 - October 23, 1998 in Amherst , New York ) was an American gynecologist who was murdered in 1998 by the militant anti-abortion opponent James Charles Kopp .
Dr. Slepian worked as a gynecologist at Buffalo GYN Womenservices, Inc. Hospital in Buffalo , where he also performed abortions . He also had a private practice in Amherst. Slepian understood the anti-abortionists thoroughly. On the subject he is reported to have said: “Abortion is undoubtedly the killing of a potential life. It's not nice. It's not easy. And in a perfect world it wouldn't be necessary. "
Slepian had returned from the synagogue on October 23, 1998, where he had attended a memorial service for his father. He was in his kitchen with his wife and four children when the Catholic anti-abortion opponent James Charles Kopp shot him through the window with a hunting rifle. The bullet barely missed his son's head. Barnett Slepian died two hours later.
In the days that followed, anti-abortion demonstrations took place in front of doctors' offices and clinics in Buffalo and Rochester .
James Charles Kopp fled to France, where he was arrested and extradited to the United States. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder in Buffalo. Kopp managed to escape to France using forged passports via Mexico and Ireland. The investigative authorities suspected supporters, in particular from the environment of the Catholic anti-abortion group "The Lambs of Christ" (Eng .: The Lambs of Christ ).
The murder was part of a wave of attacks by militant Christian anti-abortionists that claimed seven lives in the United States.
Ani DiFranco's song Hello Birmingham from the album To The Teeth refers to the murder.
