List of breeds of chicken

Barnevelders are a breed of domestic chicken .

origin

Barnevelders were first bred in Gelderland from 1850 onwards , from where they also came to Germany. The breed originated from country chickens in which private breeders crossed Cochins . Later were Goldwyandotten , Rhode countries and presumably Indian fighters crossed. The breed is considered a dual-purpose breed because it combines good laying performance , fattening ability and meat quality.

There are a number of different shades of color. The most common is the double-lined color scheme, which has a very unusual pen drawing. The feathers are double-hemmed. That is, they have a double, black line drawing on a maroon ground. At performance shows, attention is paid to an even distribution of this color characteristic.

Barnevelders are considered to be relatively calm and trusting chickens. They don't like to fly open, which makes them particularly suitable for private keeping outdoors.

The eggs have a fairly thick, brown shell, which makes them attractive for use in incubators.

Existence and endangerment

The Barneveld Chicken is rare and has been included on the list of endangered domestic animal breeds . The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food lists the Barnevelders in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in the lowest hazard class V (observation). According to this, there were 585 roosters and 2764 hens in Germany in 2009. The dwarf Barnevelders are looked after in the same special association as the large breed .
