The Barnim Place is a 7,000 square meter square in Berlin district of Marzahn in the residential area district Marzahn North . It was created after a competition in 1996; its name was suggested by Marzahn residents. The main design elements are natural stones , trees and graffiti pictures.

Origin and location

In 1993, the Marzahn district office initiated an urban development competition to create a new town square that is bordered by Havemannstrasse, Wörlitzer Strasse and Wittenberger Strasse. (To the east it borders on the route of a tram route near Borkheider Strasse.) As a result, a “space that is urban and cosmopolitan designed for people, not nature” should be created. The name of the square was chosen after suggestions from the citizens and creates a conceptual connection to the northern and eastern surroundings of Marzahn, the district of Barnim . The name was given on October 28, 1996.

In 1995 the design began, which cost a total of 4.5 million  marks . A sunken garden with around 60 trees in a symmetrical arrangement and a water basin with a lawn - all with the essential design element stones - were prepared. The official opening and the ceremonial unveiling of the name tag took place on October 28th.

The long wall that separates the square in the north-west from the “Theodor Brugsch” health center behind it was the subject of another design competition in 1999. School classes from Marzahn and the Ahrensfeld Graffiti Club were asked to come up with suggestions. A jury selected the best works, which were combined to form a coherent frieze by the painter Frank Beutel . With the support of Beutel, the young people were allowed to apply the 70 meter long and 2.50 meter high mural themselves using acrylic paints.

Graffiti on the container

At a pump house on the edge of the square and the southern entrance, further graffiti designs were carried out in a 2008 “graff that area” campaign. This youth project was led by Paul Rutz, the drafts and spray work were carried out by the group “Graffitnix”. 7,700 euros in funding were available from the participatory budget.

And elements suitable for skateboarding were installed on the square .

Acceptance and use

The place was initially not well received by the Marzahners, they criticized it and others. a. as a "stone desert". Since around 2000, however, it has been gaining increasing acceptance, it is used as a marketplace but also for larger cultural events such as an annual district festival that runs throughout the summer (Motto 2006: Colorful cultural diversity from five continents on Barnimplatz. A multicultural journey with artists from Africa , America, Asia, Australia and Europe ). The association Vision e. V. , the event manager Alena Gawron and the journalist Alexander Reiser. You receive financial support from the QuartiersAgentur Marzahn-Nordwest. Between the events, however, he is still a bit lost.
