history

etymology

The name of the district goes back to the Villa de Iseldon Berners from 1274. This in turn was named after the Berners family who lived here and who owned what is now the city for a long time.

historical development

The current urban area was owned by Ralph de Berners and his descendants between the 13th century and 1532. Through various marriages and succession , the land came into possession of Sir William Halton, who bequeathed it to his godson William Tufnell Joliffe in 1754 . The entire land was leased under a descendant of Joliffe . In the 1820s, today's urban area changed into a suburb with mainly residential buildings for the middle class . Barnsbury, like all of Islington, lost its importance with the expansion of the railway connections to the London area. Many apartments were empty and the buildings were in ruins. After the Second World War , entire streets were demolished and replaced by social housing projects or green spaces. Today Barnsbury is next to Canonbury as the most expensive part of the Borough of Islington. There are mostly large mansions here, often with small gardens.

politics

Barnsbury is part of the London Borough of Islington, which was founded in 1965. In elections to the European Parliament , the district belongs to the constituency of London . In the House of Commons election , Barnsbury is included in the constituency of Islington South and Finsbury . Emily Thornberry , a member of the Labor Party , has been looking after its interests since 2005 . She was confirmed in office with 42.3% in the 2010 elections . In the London Assembly , the North East constituency , which includes Barnsbury, Jennette Arnold represents the interests of the residents.
