The Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a 113 acres (45.7 ha ) large reserve in Barnstable in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The reserve is part of a total of 3,800 acres (15.4 km²) of salt marshes and beach ridges on the Sandy Neck, which is of great ecological importance for the region. 1.5 mi (2.4 km ) of hiking trails run alongside two lakes and through an oak forest. Three species of owls live in the reserve in winter , while five species of turtles are breeding grounds in summer . It also provides a habitat for hen harriers , snipes , the pointed-tailed bugs , which the IUCN classifies as endangered, and mud treads .
