Barnwell Castle

Barnwell Castle is a ruined castle south of the town Oundle and west of the village Barnwell in the English county of Northamptonshire . It has been listed as a Grade I Historic Building by English Heritage and is a Scheduled Monument .

A moth was erected in 1132. The stone castle was owned by the Berengar le Moyne family during the reign of King Henry III. to build. During the English Civil War , the castle served its owner, Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton , as an arsenal for the royalist cause. After the war, the Montagu family built a large mansion , Barnwell Manor , next to the castle.

Large parts of the castle have been preserved. Its floor plan is four-sided and it has cylindrical towers on the northeast, northwest and southwest corners. On the southeast corner is a gatehouse with two towers. The walls are up to 9 meters high and over 3.6 meters thick.

The castle ruins are privately owned and not accessible to the public.
