Markus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted

Viscount Bearsted , of Maidstone in the County of Kent , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created on June 16, 1925 for the entrepreneur Marcus Samuel, 1st Baron Bearsted . He was the founder of The Shell Transport and Trading Company , the predecessor of today's Royal Dutch Shell .

Subordinate title

The first Viscount had already been raised to Baronet , of the Mote and Portland Place, on August 26, 1903 , and to Baron Bearsted , of Maidstone in the County of Kent, on June 15, 1921 . These titles, which belong to the Baronetage or Peerage of the United Kingdom, have been used as subordinate titles by the respective Viscount since 1925.
